THE DIAVITIKO ASSOCIATION - For the children's hospital at Westmead
Baby Kingdom are proud sponsors of many different fundraiser committees, one being The DIAVITIKO Association. This Association is a non profit organisation that has been around for nearly 21 years and has raised in the vicinity of $750,000 to purchase vital Diabetes equipment and assist with diabetes research for the Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the children's hospital at Westmead.
Funds raised in the last few years have been utilised as follows:–
- 2003 – purchased an Infrared Pupilometer Machine – a non invasive machine enabling the specialist to measure the child’s pupils reaction to light (automatic nervous function) which is a test that occurs bi-annually as part of the diabetes screening process
- 2004 – purchased a digital camera for $50,000 which is being used for the screening and documenting of eye disease ie diabetic eye complications in the retina and is vital in managing their early detection and treatment
- 2005 – purchased a TSA-II NeuroSensory Analyser which allows testing of the nerve function in the feet i.e. to avoid long term complications of neuropathy and also 3 blood pressure monitors at a total cost of $53,000.
- 2007 – funded the creation of the Diabetes Prevention Unit at the children's hospital at Westmead. We provided the facility and equipment to assist in research aimed at the prevention of Type 1 Diabetes.
As you are aware Type 1 or Juvenile Diabetes continues to be a crippling and very prolific disease in Australia with an estimated 140,000 sufferers. Most of these sufferers are children and young adults who depend on a strict diet, exhaustive daily monitoring and daily insulin injections to survive. In conjunction with these extensive daily challenges they also live with the fear of developing devastating long-term complications.
This year’s aim was to raise $50,000 to fund the purchase of the LOGIQ ultrasound machine. This ultrasound machine will be used to measure the thickness of the plantar fascia in the foot, the tissue that surrounds the muscles under the arch of the foot. The technique shows adolescents who are at greater risk of complication progression (eye, kidney and nerve disease).
The Diavitiko Association has held a huge raffle and auction at their Annual Dinner Dance, which took place on the 30th of May 2009 at the Hall of the Saint Ioannis Greek Orthodox Church at Parramatta.
As proud sponsors of the Diavitiko Association we are glad to say that the money was raised, along with the help of other sponsors and generous donations made by the public and the purchase of the LOGIQ ultrasound machine was successful.
